MARIA PALOMARES RECEIVES NANCY PILVER HEROINE AWARD

Maria Palomares Receives Nancy Pilver Heroine AwardOn Wednesday, December 28, 2006, Maria Palomares of Manchester, CT received the Nancy Pilver Breast Cancer Heroine Award in honor of her tireless work in the fight against breast cancer.

Representative John B. Larson, D-1st District, presented the award at the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center at Hartford Hospital.

Larson commented on the Maria’s great dedication to raising awareness of the importance of early detection and regular screening. He also mentioned how her compassion and commitment have helped many women and their families who are affected by breast cancer.

Ms. Palomares is the case manager at the Connecticut Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program and WISEWOMAN at Hartford Hospital, as well as a longtime activist in the fight against breast cancer. She also serves as a liaison to the state Department of Public Health.

The award is named for Nancy Pilver, who was the first recipient of the award in 1999. Pilver was a longtime breast cancer activist who served as the state legislative chairwoman of the Connecticut Breast Cancer Coalition/Foundation. Larson was so inspired by Pilver’s story that he decided to name the award after her in 2000. Sadly, Nancy Pilver died in 2003, though her legacy lives on.

Our thanks to Roberto Basch for photographing the award presentation. Pictured from left to right are: Congressman Larson; Susan Davis, president of CBCC; Andrew Salner, MD, Hartford Hospital; Maria Palomares, Nancy Pilver Award winner; Barbara Smith, recipient of the Nancy Pilver Award in 2000.

STONINGTON BOROUGH MERCHANTS RAISE OVER $6,000 FOR THE CT BREAST CANCER COALITION EMERGENCY FUND

During the month of October the merchants of Stonington Borough joined hands to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. The “Follow the Pink Ribbons” through Stonington Borough event was a combined treasure chest hunt/silent auction where each participating business provided an auction item which customers bid on throughout the month.

As a result of the auctions and various other pink ribbon items sold that month over $6,000 was raised for the Connecticut Breast Cancer Coalition Foundation, exceeding initial expectations for the event!

There were great auction items donated such as get-away nights at the Inn at Stonington, a lobster dinner party at Skippers Dock, designer apparel at Luli and Threads, etc., pink pearls at Black Orchid Jewelers, a catered home party from Theresa’s Culinary Creations, a newspaper subscription from Tom’s News, antiques, champagne, pottery and gift certificates. Thirty-five merchants and businesses hung pink ribbons on their doors throughout the month to show their participation in the event!

Some of the merchants also sold pink ribbon awareness items such as T-Shirts at Luli, pink flower bulbs at The Room, and pink ribbon golf and tennis socks at Zia’s. The proceeds from these sales were also part of the donation to the CBCCF.
